Most of the seniors we assist live on less than $900 a month! Our Free Groceries for Seniors program helps stretch household budgets so there is enough quality food to eat everyday.
New Mexico is the second highest ranked state in the nation for senior hunger. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, one out of every seven Bernalillo County seniors live below the poverty level. Silver Horizons’ Senior Food Markets provide free groceries to almost 3,500 seniors each month, and to nearly 1,200 grandchildren many of these seniors are raising. In 2017, Silver Horizons:
- helped more than 33,600 seniors, most of whom live on less than $10,000 annual income
- distributed more than 1,480,000 pounds of food to more than 2,000 households (enough food for 1,234,000 meals)
- received more than 28,000 food pantry visits.
Our Free Groceries for Seniors program helps keep nutritious foods available to low-income seniors who must make the choice between buying groceries, paying their utility bills, paying for necessary medications, or covering other life expenses. At Silver Horizons, we believe our aging and elderly citizens in New Mexico shouldn’t have to make that choice.
If you, or a senior you know, is in need of food, please call us at 505-884-3881 or email info@SilverHorizons.org.
